12 Steps To Help Prevent ID Theft

1. Remove your name from pre-screened credit offers at or call 1-888-567-8688.

2. Add your telephone number(s) to the National Do Not Call Registry at or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

3. Remove your name from individual Direct Mail Association member mailing lists at

4. Place an alert on your credit file. A fraud alert can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you. Placing a fraud alert with the Equifax Fraud Alerts System automatically places a fraud alert on your file with Experian and TransUnion. To do so, call 1-800-525-6285 or visit Equifax.

If you are on active military duty, place an active duty alert on your credit files. If someone applies for credit in your name, the creditors will take extra precaution to make sure the applicant is not someone pretending to be you.

  • Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
  • Experian: 1-888-397-3742

10. Protect your debit and credit cards at To update your registration or cancel lost or stolen cards, call 1-866-210-0361.
